GOALS:

  • Take a “perfect” family portrait

  • Laugh

  • Create memories

  • Have fun!

Taking a portrait with your family and creating lasting memories can be so much fun and can add warmth and beauty on display in your home, office, cottage, etc.  However, when working with children and/or a large family, taking a great family portrait can be a bit stressful and may seem to take forever.  For example…

Ongoing conversations.
One child who decided to try out their "new smile" on the day he knew we were trying to capture a great family portrait. Then another one who didn't want to smile at all (except for his personal portraits).
Not impressed with our placements in the photo so he gave a good stare down to his brother who didn't even notice. Another one was tired and over it.
During photo shoot position changes.
Too tired to smile.
Trying to keep us all together.
Could have been "the one" but there is always 1 person with their eyes closed (he actually fell asleep).
2 having their own moment.

After 200 pictures were taken, for that look only with our family, we managed to get at least 2 “postcard worthy” pictures.  Honestly, the best pictures which will be decorating our home are the ones that told a story and that provoke a smile and laughter within us.

A few tips that you can use to help take a great family portrait are:

  • JUST KEEP CLICKING!

    • You will increase your chances of capturing the best moments by constantly “snapping away” and will end up with a great portrait.

  • Smile and laugh as much as you can

    • Conversations and just being yourselves can help turn a good session into a great one, and the positive atmosphere will definitely shine on camera and reflect on print.

    • Let your personalities shine and let kids be kids!

  • Bring/Include props

    • This can help keep younger children calm.

    • Props such as bubbles can help bring a picture to life and take the stress off from focusing on getting a great shot.

  • Lock the focus, use a tripod and a timer

    • Doing so can decrease the look of blurry and weird angled portraits.

  • Let there be light!

    • Lighting is important to ensure your pictures come out bright and not dull.
